*excerpts from write up from Okanagan BC* Unusual concrete block construction creates a natural, spiritual home in the South Okanagan Region of BC. Architect world renowned Henry Yorke Mann an expert at making environmentally sound buildings ‘breathe’ and be natural designed this home. Natural untreated materials such as wood, glass, stone & concrete block were used. Natural light & the geography of the land aided in fitting the site. There was no blasting or bulldozing of the landscape necessary to create the flat ground they worked on for this building. The exterior walls are concrete block cavity wall construction & cavities are filled with insulation. In the design Mann used the concrete blocks to sculptural effect. The mezzanine has storage space and a room that can be used as a 3rd bedroom or study. Oak and birch cabinets in kitchen have black walnut wood handles and the floors & ceilings are tongue & groove decking left in the natural and breathable state. The natural wood theme continues through the entire house. The natural ventilation system of the design allow the house to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Living room and dining area have a vaulted ceiling creating an airy space. Doors off the living room lead to an outdoor pergola. Bedrooms and bathrooms etc are all connected to the other areas by long hallway and narrow windows & closets on south side. This home is proof that building material are no constraint to create quality homes.
